8th May Royston Under-13s began their 2008 League season with a very creditable performance against a traditionally strong Cokenach side. In a League where each team plays the opposition only once this was always going to be a tough match for the visitors. Cokenach openers Roberts and Gosden-Hood set about the task of batting first with relish taking the home side to 57 without loss after only 4 overs. The opening pair put on over 100 before Royston made the breakthrough. In contrast to the first 4 overs of the innings, opening bowlers Philip Hall and Ben Seabrook came back strongly for the last 4, conceding only 8 runs and sharing 4 wickets. Cokenach finished their 20 overs on 153 for 4. Far from being daunted by this total to chase down, Royston openers Bonham Harper (33) and Paul Leary (36) having settled themselves in began to score freely before Leary was unlucky to be given out leg before off Lampton's spin bowling and Harper was caught sweeping off the same bowler in the next over. Brave batting from Jamie Seabrook and John Middlemass gave Royston some hope but wickets then began to fall and the innings finished on 117 for 6. This was one of the highest losing totals by a Royston team playing at Cokenach and a very creditable performance that displayed some fine fight-back qualities that should serve the team well for the rest of the season.
3rd and 6th May Royston Under-13s made a solid start to their season with a comfortable win over Ashwell in a friendly match on May 3rd and in progressing to the next round of the CYCA Under-13 Cup competition by beating Saffron Walden at their Therfield ground on May 6th. Royston batting first scored an impressive 117 off 20 overs for the loss of only three wickets. Skipper Bonham Harper along with Jamie Seabrook provided the main contribution with the bat, although the Royston batsmen were helped by some poor bowling from the visitors. In reply, Saffron Walden never threatened to get anywhere near the required total and were bowled out for 34 in the last over of the game. All the Royston bowlers turned in economical figures but Max McClean bowled three overs without conceding a run and taking three wickets in the process. Royston will play either Linton or Sawston in the next round.
