7 a-side tournament

The annual Royston Under 13 seven a side tournament took place at Therfield on Sunday with teams from Hardwick, Saffron Walden and Abington taking part. The weather was once again kind and an enjoyable day was had by all. Royston’s young team were unable to retain the trophy this year and the exciting final was eventually contested between Hardwick and Saffron Walden. Set a tournament target of 143 to win off 12 overs, Hardwick put up a brave fight but fell sort by some 20 runs, despite a memorable unbeaten 67 not out from one of the Hardwick openers.

Royston U13 v Cokenach U13

Despite their best bowling performance of the season, Royston U13’s still lost
to local rivals Cokenach. Debutant Oliver Racher producing excellent figures of 4-1-7-1.  Some good support from the other six bowlers and some good fielding
kept Cokenach down to 91 for 9 off there 20 Over’s.
Royston openers Addison (7) and Annetts (7) then put on 14 for the first
wicket, but  3 wickets in 2 over’s stopped Royston in there tracks, and despite a
solid 17 from Adam Wright, nobody else managed to get to grips with the good Cokenach bowling and Royston fell 28 runs short of their target, managing 63 for 8 of 20.

Royston U13 v Granta U13

The Under 13 side still searching for their first win of the season played away to Granta. Fielding first, Royston got off to a good start when smart work from Chris Sorrell in the field saw the opening batsman run out. Granta then had some good partnerships helped by some indifferent fielding with 6 dropped catches helping Granta onto 90 for 4 at the end of 20 overs.

Royston’s reply got off to the worst possible start with the top three batsmen all out within the first 4 overs. Toby Fynn then made a useful 17 but Royston then lost 5 more quick wickets to collapse to 49 for 8. An entertaining partnership from Chris Sorrell and Max Liddel helped Royston finish on 71 for 8.

North Herts U13 v Watford U13

Three Royston Colts players represented the U13s  North Herts District team on Sunday 3 June 2007 at their home ground in Letchworth.

They faced a very good Watford side, but very good performances from Neil Addison, Chris Sorrell and Bonham Harper contributed well to make it a close game.

Bonham opened the batting and faced some very fast bowling,  but managed to make 8 runs before being bowled out.  Neil came in at number 4 and put in an excellent batting performance to make 22  including several 4s.  Chris came in at the end and did very well to keep his wicket before the end of the innings.

The fielding from the District squad was very impressive.  Both Neil and Chris bowled extremely well keeping things very tight and Bonham took 2 good catches.

However, Watford eventually won with just a few overs to spare.

Rory Harper also represented  the North Herts District team at U15s at Bushey on 31st May and put in a very good performance as the Wicket Keeper.

I am sure the boys enjoyed the experience,  and will look forward to playing further fixtures during the school holidays.

Royston U13 v Cokenach U13

On a very low bouncing wicket Royston under 13’s batted first and found runs very hard to come by. After ten overs they found themselves on 21 for 3, but then a good stand of 30 between Adam Wright (24) and Bonham Harper (8) helped Royston to finish their innings on 61 for 6.
Royston bowlers set about defending the low total with a good spell from Leon Gibson and a superb run out with a direct hit from Bonham Harper leaving Cokenach on 13 for 2. However, some fine shots in a 45 run partnership took the game away from Royston and they finally went down by 6 wickets.

Royston CC U13  v  Granta CC U13

Batting first on a damp pitch Royston found it slow going and after 10 overs found themselves on 37 for 4. A stand of 44 between Toby Fynn (27) and Adam Wright (17) and some quick singles from Bonham Harper allowed Royston to reach 115 from their 20 overs. Granta started well and with a second wicket stand of 55 they always seemed in control. However; an excellent bowling and fielding effort from Royston made sure the winning run was only scored in the last over of the match.
